Pulitzer Prize for Public Service
The Post and Courier won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for the series “Till Death Do Us Part” on domestic violence in South Carolina. The series probed why South Carolina is among the deadliest states for women and put the issue of what to do about it on the state’s agenda.
Pulitzer Finalists
In 2019, for Feature Writing for an examination by Jennifer Berry Hawes and Deanna Pan of the case of 14-year-old black boy George Stinney who was wrongfully convicted and executed for killing two white girls.
In 2016, for Breaking News for coverage of the Walter Scott shooting and in Feature Photography.
Green Eyeshade Award for the best daily newspaper reporting in the Southeast in 2016 for coverage of the killing of Walter Scott by a North Charleston police officer. The Post and Courier was selected from 23 first-place winners in categories ranging from breaking and non-breaking news to feature writing, sports and commentary. The Post and Courier had won first place in six of those categories in 2016, more than any other daily newspaper.
The Silver AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Award, Finalist for the John B. Oakes Award for Distinguished Environmental Journalism, Finalist for the Columbia Journalism School’s John B. Oakes Award for “SCUM,” a first-of-its-kind look at the extent of harmful algae blooms across the country written by reporter Tony Bartelme.
Society of Environmental Journalists First Place award for outstanding coverage of environmental issues by Tony Bartelme.
Associated Press Media Editors Awards grand prize for work advancing the principles of the First Amendment for “Watched” a series chronicling police surveillance tactics by Glenn Smith and Andrew Knapp.
The James Beard Award for Local Impact Journalism to food editor and chief critic, Hanna Raskin. The award recognizes the work of an individual who displays enterprise and excellence in ongoing local food coverage.” Raskin’s three winning pieces included “’Free crabs!’, “A Significant Goodbye”, and “Feeding the Prison System.”
Gerald Loeb Award for excellence in journalism in the fields of business, finance and the economy for “Stickin’ with The Pig: A tale of loyalty and loss” (https://data.postandcourier.com/saga/piggly-wiggly/page/1) The series was written by Tony Bartelme.
Scripps Howard Awards
In breaking news category for coverage of the mass shooting at Mother Emanuel Church.
In community news reporting for the series, “Shots Fired,” which analyzed how police shootings are investigated in South Carolina. The series was reported by Tony Bartelme, Andrew Knapp, Doug Pardue, David Slade and Glenn Smith.

The Post and Courier is the most recognized newspaper in South Carolina winner of the President’s Cup for Excellence 12 of the last 13 years from the South Carolina Press Association for the best overall performance in the annual press association awards. In 2019, The Post and Courier won 97 total awards.
